Floriculture — Roses & Summer Flowers
Cut Flowers · Greenhouse production, export logistics
Rise in European gas prices is shifting cut-flower demand to African producers. Zimbabwe can add 300 ha of roses and 500 ha of summer flowers — a combined US$277 million gross margin opportunity with cash flow within 3 months of planting.

The demand for cut flowers from Zimbabwe and Africa is likely to increase due to the rise in gas prices in Europe. EU countries like the Netherlands use heated greenhouses to mimic climate conditions in African countries like Zimbabwe. Production in Zimbabwe starts in September and ends in June which does not coincide with European production. The country also has different climatic regions which allow for the growth of different varieties.
Zimbabwean floriculture uses natural climatic conditions rather than energy-intensive heated greenhouses, giving a permanent structural cost advantage over European producers.
Where the capital goes.
Rose production from Zimbabwe can grow with a further 300 hectares — especially with increased demand from South African, Russia and Far East markets — equating to a potential 600 million stems with a gross margin of US$90 million per annum. High-end summer flowers could grow with a further 500 hectares for the same markets, with potential production of 750 million stems and gross margin worth US$187 million. Floriculture has a fast return on investment as cash flows set in three months after planting.
