The country has up to 10,000 small to medium dams with potential to develop up to 2 million hectares of irrigation. However, irrigation is currently slightly above 10% of potential at 216,000 hectares — out of which 173,000 hectares are non-functional. This creates a major infrastructure investment opportunity in rehabilitation, new-build, water storage, distribution networks and on-farm systems.
Zimbabwe's water resource base — 10,000 dams and 4,087 km² of surface water — is significantly under-deployed. Only 10% of national irrigation potential is currently developed.
Where the capital goes.
Opportunities exist in dam rehabilitation and greenfield construction, bulk water conveyance, distribution networks, centre-pivot and drip systems, solar-powered pumping stations, and PPP frameworks for irrigation scheme rehabilitation. Recovering the 173,000 ha of non-functional irrigation alone is a nation-scale programme.
